Adaaya: A seed to sustainability

By Lakshya
“Passion, creativity, and resilience are the most crucial skills in business. If you’ve got those, you’re ready to embark on the journey.”
This is pretty much the preamble to the constitution of Entrepreneurs. When a person decides to start a venture, he assesses the obstacles to be faced and the consequences of his activities on various stakeholders. Today, many of these ventures have an added important objective of being environmentally viable in their long list of goals.
When T Harsh and Roli Bhat decided to hang their boots and bring an end to their adventurous corporate journeys, they soon found themselves creating one of the leading manufacturers and exporters of Areca leaf tableware- Adaaya Farms. They have an ever-expanding international market and are trying to establish considerable outreach in domestic market as well.
While creating consumer awareness is one challenge for sustainable products, another challenge is setting up an efficient business process. Many hurdles are faced to meet the growing demand. Firstly, this industry faces labour shortage as the process is labour intensive. Additionally, due to very small land holdings of farmers, it becomes difficult to collect large quantities of sheaths at one time. Also, the price of raw material increases as the demand increases. Most importantly, Areca dry sheaths are available only from December to April. Hence, stockpiling a sufficient amount and that too in a dry place to avoid fungus becomes imperative.
Obstacles aside, Adaaya Farm is responsible for provisioning these eco-friendly solutions and inculcating these solutions in our normal life is an important step towards keeping our environment clean and reducing the dependence on plastic.
