Online Food Ordering

By Lakshya

One visible effect of Covid 19 has been that once-bustling food establishments are sitting empty while staff and management adjust to the new realities of the business.
With the government putting a ban on Dine-in, many restaurants have closed down or resorted to providing curb-pickups or home delivery of the food. Many famous restaurants in New York, London, Mumbai and other major cities never had an established delivery system as most of their revenues were earned through dine-ins. But now, their entire revenue is based on curb-pickups or home deliveries. Following the current trend, the food aggregators around the world have seen an increase in the number of new restaurants being registered on their platform. The safety standards adopted by the restaurants as well as the delivery employees have kept the customer’s taste buds active and restaurants’ revenue engines bustling.
The restaurants are using innovative solutions to promote their business by providing combo meals, special discounts, add-ons and family kits. Moreover, the restaurants have resorted to the age-old technique of telephones for taking the order to avoid the fees charged by the aggregators and also utilizing the extra employees as delivery men and keeping them on the payroll.
However, the exponential growth of food deliveries and curb-pickups has a downside to it in the form of increased use of banned single-use plastics for packaging of the food. Since the customers fear the use of reusable cutlery, the use of single-use tableware has risen. Moreover, restaurants are favouring packing individual portions in a single plastic container leading to use of increased number of such containers.
Many environmentalists and organizations believe that the use of plastics and its disposal at such a large scale would make the environment vulnerable to the hazards of it. The novel Covid-19 may become a past someday but this humongous amount of plastic would stay. Therefore, the use of self-containers at the time of curb-pickups or use of compostable biodegradable tableware by restaurants while delivering the food can be some appropriate alternatives.
