Karnataka accounts for 60%, Assam and Tripura for 25%, Kerala for 10% and Tamil Nadu for 5% of India’s areca palm plantations. Shimoga in Karnataka contains about 80% of the state’s plantations, meaning it accounts for almost half the country’s plantations! One could call it the palm capital of India! Assuming an acre holds about 500 trees, with good maintenance, a farmer can make a handsome sum of money that could be enough for a whole family. The areca palm is one of the most lucrative options available to farmers right now. In fact, in an age where the acreage of agricultural land is coming down to make way for urban and industrial zones, the acreage of palm plantations has only increased. Can you guess how many areca palm trees Indian plantations grow?</span></span><br></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:11pt;"><br></span></span></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:11pt;">You could sustain a whole family, or even two with an areca palm plantation! Areca palm plantations have proven to be very lucrative for farmers, given their low maintenance costs and high returns on investment. Also, with people becoming environmentally conscious and switching to eco-friendly alternatives like palm leaf plates, the demand for palm leaves has gone up. In fact, there is a shortage of areca palm leaves. But as always economics does the job! The mismatch between supply and demand has been noticed and people are switching to areca palm farming from other less lucrative crops. Thus the coverage of areca plantations in India is growing constantly. Do you think your area could host another plantation?</span></span><span style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:11pt;"><br></span></span></p></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>

That’s how many trees a typical areca palm plantation can grow in an acre without any hassles. These trees have adapted to the dry climate of India and can survive on regular irrigation supplemented by rainfall. As a plantation, they act as windbreaks and reduce the speed of wind in the area, thus also helping reduce soil erosion and related issues. Wondering if these trees are lucrative investments? Areca palm trees are low-maintenance trees and do not require too much expenditure on the part of the farmers. Their return on investment is also very high and virtually guarantees the farmer a great profit. This is where the tree’s leaves grow. An areca palm has a lifespan of 30 to 40 years. It begins shedding leaves when it is 7 years old. The average areca palm sheds 8 leaves a year, of which 4 or 5 are worth being collected for processing. The farmer himself doesn’t collect them. Instead, he generously allows people from villages surrounding the plantation to collect the leaves to sell. This serves as an important avenue of income for them and is enough to keep them going for a while. Thus areca palm plantations in a way are circular systems that sustain themselves and the surrounding localities. Now that’s what sustainability is! Manufacturers that use the leaves pay the local people for them, who in turn help the farmer by clearing their plantation of fallen leaves. This helps the farmer continue reaping good profits and taking care of the plantation for years to come. Quite ingenious, don’t you think?</span></span><br></p><p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:inherit;"><span style="font-size:11pt;"><br></span></span></p><div style="color:inherit;"><p style="text-align:justify;">Don’t you love driving past palm trees with their bright leaves? Areca palms boast of luscious bright yellow-green leaves at the top of the trunk. They can turn brown on the tips if the heat becomes too much for them. In such a case, you’d have to give them a little haircut to ease the stress on the leaf! The leaves can grow to the size of your arm and finally fall as the tree grows. Fallen leaves can be used as firewood for cooking, or even as fertilisers. Besides these, they are also used by companies like Adaaya to make palm leaf tableware, an eco-friendly substitute for plastic tableware that is harsh on the environment. Have you ever grown an indoor areca plant?&nbsp;</p></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div></div>

That’s the word that comes to mind when you think of an areca palm leaf plate. Its sturdiness isn’t a surprise considering how hard the leaf sheath is.
