Don’t we all love sugar?! It comes from sugarcane, which is crushed in sugar mills to get the sweet bit. So what happens to the sugarcane after that? It becomes a dry fibrous material called bagasse. For every 10 tonnes of sugarcane crushed, we get 3-4 tonnes of bagasse. Bagasse has its own uses, including being made into disposable tableware! Basically it can be used as a substitute of wood, and incorporated into the process of making disposable plates and cutlery. Research suggests that this might give the user nutrients that get absorbed by the food from the plate, and that they might control Type 2 diabetes. Have you ever used a bagasse product?
