You’re disgusted to find streets, shops and every other lane with all kinds of discarded wastes. You’ve started to feel suffocated, choked and trapped. To add to your sorrow, you stumble upon the pile and fell into the garbage and there is no one to even rescue you!

A scenario that is painful to even imagine, right? But that’s the harsh reality; just replace yourself with the helpless animals and CP with whole of the Earth. India generates 9.46 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, of which Delhi tops the list with 690 tonnes of daily plastic waste. Delhi has been the hot topic for quite some time because of the polluted air and smog that covers the city like a blanket.

But what is actually causing the pollution in Delhi? The major sources include plastic waste and stubble burning. According to a study by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), 80% of the plastics consumed are used in packaging sector. Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal, in a September 2018 blog, estimated that orders through food delivery aggregators were adding up to “22,000 tonnes of plastic waste created every month in India”. The contribution through stubble burning may not be much but it peaks at the time of harvest season. To make the land ready for growing wheat, excess crops of rice are burnt down by the farmers after harvesting. Due to stubble burning, harmful gasses like nitrogen and carbon dioxide are released into the air, creating smog in the atmosphere.

Several initiatives like, odd-even rule, ban on single-use plastics and subsidies to farmers for buying happy seeder machines have been taken by government to deal with the issue. Delhi has been showing improvement but there’s still a long way to go to make it pollution free. It is the duty of all the citizens and not only the government to be concerned about the worsening condition in Delhi. For this, small steps can be taken by each individual. They can start by switching to biodegradable dinnerwares made from areca leaves and put a full stop on plastic plates and bowls. Staggering reduction can be seen in the plastic waste by replacing plastic disposables with areca palmwares.

Adaaya is a leading manufacturer of Areca Palm dinnerware and has got products ranging from plates and bowls of different sizes to party packs that can be used for birthday parties, weddings and all sorts of functions. Areca palm dinnwerwares are chemical free and microwaveable as well. Roli and Harsh have been trying hard to spread awareness among people to opt for 100% natural disposables and contribute towards a healthy future.

#delhipollution #airpollution #pollution #cleanair #AdaayaFarms

Fast forward to 1908, when an American public health officer, Samuel J. Crumbine realised that how commonly used utensils in public places caused the spread of tuberculosis which inspired him to launch a crusade to ban publicly used utensils. Following the trend, Lawrence Luellen along with Hugh Moore embarked on an advertising campaign to spread awareness about germs spreading through glasses and sippers commonly used at public places. They invented an iced-cooled water vending machine with disposable cups and found a company called “Health Kup” that produced cone shaped single serving cups. Later on, that company changed its name to “Dixie Cup” in 1919 which is known to all today.

Such old is the history of natural disposables, which is perhaps, much older than the paper based disposables. Then came the plastic and polystyrene based disposables and the carbon footprint started increasing tremendously. Now, according to a survey, we are producing over 300 million tons of plastic every year, 50% of which is for single-use purposes. Most of the discarded plastic ends up in landfills, in oceans or elsewhere in the environment, making Human Beings the biggest enemy of Earth.

To learn from our ancestors and move back to biodegradable disposals has become need of the hour. There are several leaves from which 100% natural disposables can be produced, such as leaves of banyan tree, sugarcane, wood, bamboo, areca palm, and lotus to name a few. Many entrepreneurs are foraying into this industry and raising a concern against usage of plastic.

Adaaya, which is a leading manufacturer of areca palm plates and bowls in India, is also trying to bring a change in the world and make our Earth greener. Street food, food-on-the- go, festival food, event catering, New Year parties and…and….and are often not feasible without disposable tableware. Though the plastic industry is believed to produce biodegradable products but there is a stark difference between biodegradable and compostable substance. Biodegradable substances should break down quickly and safely into harmless compounds. However, they will break at different rates depending on the original material it is made of and how much it is processed. There is no fixed time, while compostable means breaking down into natural elements in a compost environment. Because its broken down into its natural elements it causes no harm to the environment. The breakdown process usually takes 90 days.

Owing to the current environmental conditions, especially the outbreak of covid-19, it is advisable to use compostable alternatives. Using compostable alternatives over biodegradable plastic seems to be the sound decision. Therefore, Adaaya Farm brings you eco-friendly compostable alternative, we manufacture and export areca leaf tableware. It is 100% natural and chemical free. At Adaaya we aim at reducing the dependence on plastics and come up with alternatives to provide sustainability.

#disposables #biodegradables #compostable #single_use #environment #adaaya #arecapalm #arecaplates

However, a strong upsurge in wave of sustainable development has created a potential market for areca dinnerware manufacturers.

Earlier, these fallen leaves were considered as waste and farmers used to burn them. But when Roli and Harsh, the founders behind Adaaya, saw an opportunity in manufacturing areca dinnerware, went onto convincing farmers from village to village, to not burn them but rather collect them and sell them to Adaaya. Once farmers realised that this initiative would help them earning additional income, they were convinced. Today, Adaaya has collaborated with 300 farmers that supply them areca sheaths.

Areca is a seasonal crop and is harvested after the rainy season, arising the need for storage of these sheaths. Manufacturers therefore need huge storage spaces where these sheaths can be kept very carefully and need to ensure tht no moisture gets in contact with these sheaths, else fungus starts growing on them. Adaaya has rented storage warehouses at various locations in Karnataka.

Land is again required for carrying out the manufacturing process. Roli and Harsh realised that there are several vacant rice mills where no work is being carried out and thought of it as an alternative. They made the best use of these unused mills and converted them into manufacturing plants for areca plates.

Now comes the issue of labour and workforce. All of Adaaya’s labour is of women workforce, who are the breadwinners of their families because men generally opt for contractual labour in Karnataka. Thus sustainable growth and women empowerment form the key aspects of Adaaya.

The last step includes selling the plates nationally as well as internationally. Adaaya caters to 28 countries in the world and hence, is one of the largest manufacturer exporters in India. With an aim to eliminate the need of middlemen, Adaaya directly sells its products to local as well as global clients. In India, bulk orders are received from hotels and restaurants who then flaunt their dishes in areca plates when serving to the customers. Apart from these, areca plates are also used in functions and events like marriages, parties or religious events. These eco-friendly disposables are gradually replacing thermocol and plastic disposable which are otherwise hazardous for the environment.

To run a business is not a cake walk, but nothing is impossible if you are determined and dedicated. With all the challenges prevailing in this industry, Roli and Harsh took this venture and established Adaaya, with the motive to bring a change in the society.

Rather the women seem satisfied with the work from home activities or looking after the family. The point that I am trying to make is it has now become somewhat fashionable to not go to work. There is no sulking or inferiority complex, but a flaunting of adequacy of income, assets and wealth.

However, employment among rural women has dropped significantly from 48.5% in 2004-05 to 23.7% in 2017-18 due to unavailability of work in the labour sector. Rising inflation and cost of living, makes it necessary for the women in rural areas to contribute in the family income. To provide relief and empower women in rural areas, various private organizations are taking serious steps in improving their working conditions and making it easier for women to get employment.

One such organization is Adaaya Farm, it is the leading manufacturer and exporter of areca leaf tableware. The founders of the company are committed to provide safe and hygienic working conditions for women. This labour intensive industry has helped women to step out of their houses and from under the shadows of the patriarchy very much present in the rural districts of India. They have been provided the opportunity to be the equal contributor in the income of the family or in some cases become the sole bread earner. They are given proper training regarding the various steps in manufacturing of the products; handpicking the perfect areca sheath, washing them properly to avoid the germs, and finally drying it so that they are pressed in a hydraulic press machine to make varied sizes and shapes. Packaging the inventory, maintaining the inventory and exporting the orders are also the part of their job description.

As stated by International Labour Organization, increasing women’s labour force participation by 10 percentage points could add $770 billion to India’s GDP by 2025. Many hurdles are faced to meet the growing demand. Firstly, this industry faces labour shortage as the process is labour intensive. Around 80% of Areca trees in India are grown in Karnataka. Initially, the nuts were used for commercial purposes like it is suitable for mastication. The remnant leaves were either burnt or disposed of by farmers. Recently, the eco-conscious entrepreneurs of India have decided to convert this annual waste of 28.8 to 32.4 million leaves into a thriving business of biodegradable compostable tableware. Be it a beach party, potluck or camping, the areca plates serves all the purposes due to number of benefits it provides.

· Areca Leaf Plates are 100% Natural- Since they are made from fallen leaves of the Areca nut palm tree and pressed by the hydraulic press machine, it is free from chemicals, glue and binders. It has no extra coating applied on it to retain the texture.

· Easy Handling- It is better to use a hand as a plate than using plastic or paper based plates or bowls as they give away as the weight of food increases ( Very irritating, I Know Right!). But Areca plates are not only lightweight but also durable. They let you enjoy your food wearing your favourite clothes.

· Different Styles- Today the change is the new constant. Standard and Regularity are no more the norm. The tonne of plastic garbage being produced by the world is wreaking havoc on the natural ecosystem of the world. The very reason people started using these products was because these are easily biodegradable and can be used as manure.

From Vietnam to India, from moat abused substance to using it as eco-friendly products, the Areca trees provide a large gamut of usable products.
